Hey everyone, long time no see. Been busy touring and working on Mad MIkes Bug! Just wanted to throw some info out there about my recent wheel and tire upgrade on my 89 Vanagon. Knowing that I was going to need new tires I started researching what sizes I could upgrade to. After many hours of reading I found no solid info about how big or how fat I could go. So with some help from the good people at Discount Tire Direct and some physical measuring on my own I took a guestimate. Heres what I came up with.
Originally my Wolfsburg Weekender came with 14' stock aluminium wheels. The van has NOT been lowered or suspension altered other than maybe some sag from old age.
I ended up putting some 16' Voxx 5 spoke, 5x112 7' wheels with a +25 offset and 205/60/16's on. They fit wonderfully! I did however have to make 2 slight mod's to get the front wheels to fit.
1) On the passenger front I had to remove the greese cap so the wheel would fit with the center caps in tact. Which is no biggy because the wheel completely encompasses the area to keep it free from dirt.
2) On the drivers side I had to leave the grease cap on due to the speedo cable, so I had to shave the prongs of of the center cap and silicone it into place.
One small observation... I could have gone with a 7.5' in the rear simply because there is more room in the wheel well with the offset. I could probably even use a small spacer to help solve that issue.
Heres some pics... I hope this info is helpful to anyone in a similar situation.
