Before Mad
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

when I started grinding I found this Shocked Smile
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

making patches Cool
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

after welding 6 different patches and a little grinding Smile
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and after a quick skim coat on the door as I had to get it back together so I can get to work tomorrow Smile

Today's update

Was able to spend a little time on the truck this morning so I

pulled the door back off and smoothed the welds a little more
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And I put the first coat of filler on the dogleg

looks a lot better but I do have a low area at the weld that I need to address

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

the welds look a lot better

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

BTW that's white primer on it so it doesn't look quite as bad till I get everything ready for paint

Here is the door after a little more work

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I'm going to roll with this one but I'll keep my eye out for another door .

the more I look at it the rougher it becomes.

The outside looks OK but the bottom is kind of wormy I patched the holes but I'm not sure how long it will last.

I'll keep enough paint in reserve so if I find another one I can match it.

knew that the rocker had some fiberglass in it but, I was not expecting this! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Oh well looks like I'll be buying a rocker if I can find one!

and so I put the door back on I may try to sand blast the inner rocker metal tomorrow

Y'all have a HAPPY NEW YEAR and be safe !

Well I'm in a bad mood Mad
Monkey Nut doesn't have Gerson's rocker in stock and
with Gerson's 15% price hike it's 57.50 for the rocker and then 30 bucks shipping from
Colombia. And Then there's the issue that I'd have to modify a split
double cab rocker.

So for $25.00 versus $90.00 I have decided to
modify a bus rocker.
Won't be funky green metal but it'll work Smile

I'll pick up one and start chopping it to fit!
Starting to wonder if I'll have it done for the Lakeland show.
It may be in primer BUT it will be there ! Very Happy

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Finished the rear rocker
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I also cleaned up the inner rocker and gave it a coat of OSPHO
because the new one should be here tomorrow!

OK guys here's tonight's progress
The rocker was not even close in shape and is to short so...

Took the new rocker and cut it in half[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

cut welded and bent the lip to the right shape
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

took the other half of the new rocker and attached it along the bottom
and put the modified piece on top and this is what I got!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I think this will work
I ran out of wire Mad so it's held on by a couple of screws

Tomorrow I'll get a new roll of mig wire and weld the two pieces together then weld it in Very Happy Very Happy

Today's progress
I don't have any pictures of the welding of the rocker (I got busy and forgot to take pictures!) but here are the results after grinding and a quick smear of filler
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

All the metal replacement on the passenger side is finished and the body work is all roughed in so I'm on the rear.
The truck was hit on the right rear and repaired sometime in the past and the engine compartment lid was bent and does not fit right.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I have a replacement lid that I am going to use but the opening needs a little tweak to get everything to fit right
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Wish me Luck
I'm going to pull the it redneck style using a tree and a come-along!
only need to pull the area less than an 1/2 inch so I think I'll be OK

Just a small update
I spent almost 4 hours trying to get the rear engine lid off and finally resorted to cutting one of the hinges off and opening the panel up to remove the nut plate
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
but I won the fight in the end
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The new lid fits much better but there is still a lot of work to do to straighten the opening

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I found more rust behind the engine compartment seal to fix so I'll weld up the cuts around the hinge when I repair the rust

Tuesday's progress
Went from this
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
To this
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
All the repaired areas are in hi build primer and after I block it a couple of times all should be good

I had a huge oilcan issue and I wound up replacing a piece of the rear panel and sectioning the remaining steel to get it straight but I won the fight in the end!

Now on to the other side !

yesterday's Progress

I went ahead and sanded all the lower truck and put it all in hi build primer
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

still needs the drivers dogleg replaced and the nose needs some work but at least it's all one shade of primer

the rear looks a LOT straighter now
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I like the two tone effect and am thinking I may go that route with a tan lower and white top

What do you think?
EDIT FOR CONTENT

I have decided to stay with the white!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and I'm almost done with the nose
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The progress continues but I don't think I'll be done by the Lakeland show but I'll be there in primer!

The weekend update
I replaced the seal area for the deck lid seal, I used a piece of angle iron to make it you can see the new metal for the seal at the top
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
With the completion of that all metal work is done now I have alot of blocking and sanding to do
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
spent the rest of Saturday afternoon on the rear and passengers side and it's about ready for paint.

I got tired of sanding and needed a break so I decided to replace the 3rd door window with a pop out from Wolfgang's I can't say I'm real impressed with the fit or design.
After priming the opening
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
the outer seal is not on yet and I need to adjust the window to the opening some more. I'm going to paint the frames black and the hinge body color so it will blend in better.

Window popped open
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I'm not going to weld the window hinges and latch in as suggested because, if I had to do it over I would have bought new seals and stayed with the original windows, and I may do just that later.

I'm a lot closer to paint Very Happy
I've finished the pop outs.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Got the passengers side in final primer the rear window area and the rear is done!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
straightened and painted the rear bumper, looks a lot better.

Going over the nose one more time and then all the little spots.

I hope to get all the prep done tomorrow, then on my next day I have off paint.

That's my plan but things seldom go as planed!

I got the paint for the truck I went with Matrix single stage urethane in white. Matches real close to what was on the truck.

I got a gallon which will give me 6 sprayable quarts with reducer and hardener. I think that will be enough. I'm not spraying the interior or the inside the bed.

The next update should be the truck in color!

WELL I think It's time to stop until after the Lakeland show.
I have to work just about every day until the show anyways.
The truck looks presentable as is but there are still a few little spots to finish
so I'm going to hang the bumpers back on and call it good for now.
I'll get back after it again after the show.
Here are a couple of pics from today
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Wanted to get it done but I'm out of gas! if I keep pushing and try to get finished
I'll screw something up for sure! Wink

OK peeps I'm pooped so I just copied what I put up on the samba

Got the double cab ready for paint yesterday afternoon.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And masked up after supper.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

AND GOT IT PAINTED TODAY Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And put back together this afternoon!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Was a long day stoped about 8:30 tonight but I'm glad to be almost done.

I still need to do some jam work paint the front bumper and a little cleanup but it looks pretty darn good.

I don't think I'll worry about buffing the paint as I'm only going to scratch it up again.

The main thing is I FIXED THE RUST! maybe it will last a few more years Very Happy
