| Ok, here it is. The car runs great until I turn on the headlights and then it all goes down hill from there. I usually end with a dead battery. I have two little green lights at the bottom of the speedo that stay lit at all times. I've looked thru my manual but cant find any diagram or ref to what all the idoit lights are for. I'm hoping its the regulator or maybe I have a wire crossed since I had to rewire the charred remains of the engine bay. Dave, are you out there????? | |

| have you looked at the regulator to see that all the wires are hooked up? the idiot light should go off once the engine has started, that light excites the system just like it does if running an alt. i do have a wiring diagram for the voltage regulator for a generator charging system i will try to dig it out. | |

| I checked the wires to the reg, they seem to be ok. While I was looking at my wire diagram this morning I did notice that there is an explanation for the some of the idiot lights. I think I might try replacing the regulator and hope the problem goes away. I would hate to have to reopen the wire loom or buy a new generator.
I was hoping that someone may hae had the same exact issue so I could eliminate some of the guessing....Thanks for the info Mud!

| So.....I realized I had the generator wires backwards! Because thats the way the diagram in my $50. book explains it. I found this out by looking at pictures of other generators. Ok, now I figure I've burned up the regulator and it needs to be replaced and so I did. When I started the car the generator light did not go off and niether did the oil pressure light. Well, I know I have oil pressure so I'm "guessing" I may have a bad generator....this SUCKS!! | |

| Have you put a meter in the generator to see if it's putting out voltage? That's really the only way to know if it's bad or not.
I would make sure the generator is putting out voltage, then start troubleshooting the warning lights.
Remember, you may have to rev the motor up some once before the generator actually starts charging. Up to about 3,000 RPM should be plenty to get it excited and start charging.
