Building one for a VW is easy. Just build 2 fixtures to fit into engine stands. The front can clamp in where the beam goes, and the back bolts to the rear tranny mount.

Wouldn't there be a height concern when using engine stands?

Too tall or too short?

I know you can't roll the body all the way over if using engine stands, but I don't know if you could with any rotisserie.

I was guessing the stands to be too short. I could be wrong but i'm thinking it wouldn't even clear while the car is on its side.

I've never used one personally, but I've seen them on the samba, and a friend of mine uses one to paint his rail buggies, and his buggies use torsions 15" wider than stock, so the cars are pretty wide.

It may depend on the type of stand you use. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea. I searched for topics about this and found a couple of people who have done this. Only one mentioned the need to extend the "neck" of the stand so the car could turn on its side. I'll have to keep this idea in mind in case I ever get the opportunity to do a body off resto on my rusto Laughing
